Abstract:

In this paper, we describe existing implementations for putting subtitles and captions alongside the HTML5 <video> tag inside Web pages and a proposal for standardizing such approaches, which will make them interoperable and easier to be processed by automated tools. Since video and audio are fundamental data types that any Web user will want to make use of nowadays — if young or old — if impaired or not — a standard means of providing accessibility to such fundamental data types is of utmost importance as part of the standardization process of the <video> and <audio> tags. The proposal is an outcome of a Mozilla grant and of extensive discussions within the Xiph accessibility group. Ideas discussed on the WHATWG mailing list have also been taken into account. Standardization work for this is ongoing.

    When you say “Download PDF from ACM,” you mean “ACM members may download a PDF about this Web-accessibility topic.” The paper will remain essentially secret and unpublished to everybody else.

    That’s how copyright works these days. Just send me an email if you would like to get the article. :-)

    Ms. Pfieffer,

    I would love to get my hands on a copy of that article, if that offer is still on the table and/or was meant for more than Mr. Clark.
    I tried to be proactive and went ahead and joined, but of course I’m not willing to pay for something that I haven’t seen. Plus you didn’t mention cost in your response. I know how horrible that sounds…meh…I do have the best intentions and will only use it for good!
    Regardless, thank you for your awesome blog, info and time!
    Happy New Year!
    Cheers,
    Albert

    @Albert,

    According to the copyright form that any publishers has to sign with the ACM when publishing a paper, you’re not allowed to re-publish. But as an author, you can distribute copies personally. So, I’m happy to reply to emails with a copy of the paper, but I’m not allowed to put the pdf online. The article is on its way.

    Best Regards & Happy New Year to you, too.
    Silvia.
